Ornithonyssus spp. are mesostigmatid mites of the family Macronyssidae. The two Ornithonyssus species reported to infect hamsters are Ornithonyssus bacoti, the tropical rat mite or red mite, and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, the northern fowl mite.

Identification of D. gallinae can be difficult for scientists not familiar with mite morphology and terminology especially when trying to use identification keys. Moreover, this species may easily be confused with another dermanyssoid mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (northern fowl mite), which often shares the same hosts and environment. The northern fowl mite (NFM),Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is the most common ectoparasite of laying hens in North America. Infestation can cause a reduction in egg production, egg weights, and feed conversion efficiency. However, there is a lack of information on the effects of NFM on hen physiology, ph … The two Ornithonyssus species reported to infect hamsters are Ornithonyssus bacoti, the tropical rat mite or red mite, and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, the northern fowl mite. Although O. bacoti has a wide host range, the primary hosts are the brown Norway rat ( Rattus norvegicus ) and the black roof rat ( Rattus rattus ) ( Fox, 1982 ). Moreover, this species may easily be confused with another dermanyssoid mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (northern fowl mite), which often shares the same hosts and environment.

Liponyssus sylviarum[Ornithonyssus sylviarum], C. & F., which had only been recorded twice in Canada, in Ontario in 1922 and in British Columbia in 1929, was observed during the early part of 1931 infesting fowls and eight species of wild birds in Quebec. The mites were identified as the northern fowl mite Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae). This was supported by sequence analysis of a 642-bp region in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene (COI) in mites collected from five flocks, which showed 97–99% sequence similarity to O. sylviarum by blast analysis.

Clínica Ricardo Palma Correo electrónico: maluttss@hotmail.com Abstract. An increasing population of northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, that contained many immatures ingested up to 200 μl of blood/day/100 mg mites, while a declining population of mites that consisted largely of adults ingested 80 μl of whole blood/day/100 mg mites as determined by radioassay of 51 Cr-labeled erythrocytes. Toxicity was determined for 15 acaricides against a laboratory strain of northern fowl mites,Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago).

Abstract. The northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago, 1877) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) is a broadly distributed blood-feeding parasite that has been collected from many birds of temperate regions.

The tropical rate mite, Ornithonyssus bacoti, builds up large populations on feral mice and infests native mammals as well. The tropical fowl mite, Ornithonyssus bursa , infests a variety of introduced and native birds and is the most common source of human bites by mites in Brisbane; O. sylviarum causes similar problems in more temperate regions. morphology and terminology especially when trying to use identification keys.

The northern fowl mite cannot survive for more than a month off its host, while the chicken mite hides in cracks and crevices near bird nests during the day and feeds by night.
